1998 King Cake Review...

The Schwegmann King Cake

The label on every Schwegmann's king cake proclaims "Baked in the Old New Orleans Tradition." The Schwegmann king cakes we tried were all of very good quality and were indeed fine examples of the "Old New Orleans Tradition." Schwegmann offers several varieties including (but not limited to) the following...

• Unfilled traditional sugar topped cakes with or without white icing and cherries.
• Apple filled
• Cherry filled
• Cream cheese filled
• Apple and cream cheese filled
• Cherry and cream cheese filled

The flavor of the cake was good for all of the samples we tested, but they also tended to be slightly dry. Purple, green and yellow sugar crystal toppings were plentiful and artfully applied giving the Schwegmann cakes an excellent appearence. Most cakes also had white icing ribbons. Fillings were flavorful. The Schwegmann king cakes had an excellent balance between the amount of filling and the amount of cake. Prices were excellent, as was availability of different varieties at the stores we visited.

Overall, Schwegmann offers a very good king cake at an excellent price.
