1998 King Cake Review...
The Gambino's King Cake

For years now Gambino's has offered the "King of King Cakes." Our tests rated Gambino's king cakes excellent in five out of eight categories.
Gambino's offers a wide variety of cakes ranging from traditional (unfilled) to double filled. Fillings include apple, blueberry, cherry and cream cheese. The double filled cakes generally consist of a fruit filling paired with cream cheese.
Gambino's offers a convenient
range of sizes from regular (the size you generally see offered in most
stores) to extra large (which is big enough for a fair sized party).
The cakes we tested all had a uniformly excellent flavor and were very moist by king cake standards. Toppings (purple, gold and green sugar crystals on white icing) were excellent in flavor and generally had a very good appearence. The toppings were slightly damaged on some of the larger cakes due to being packaged in bags, but this was generally minor.
The fillings we tried (blueberry, apple and blueberry/cream cheese) were outstanding. Unfortunately our rating system only goes up to excellent. We considered adding another notch for outstanding, but opted in favor of staying within our original system.
The availability of all sizes and varieties at the Gambino's we visited was excellent, as was the service. The staff easily answered all manner of questions about their product.
Gambino's king cake prices are reasonable, though a bit higher than many competitors. When balanced against quality, Gambino's comes out as an excellent value.

It can't be denied that Gambino's offers an excellent king cake. We highly recommend that you add a stop at Gambino's to your Mardi Gras to do list.
