Ponchartrain ShoresPonchartrain Shores is a narrow, but very long public park area spanning the entire lakefront of Jefferson Parish. Along this vast stretch, the park is generally confined to an area from the levee to the shoreline. Along most of this extent, residential areas are located just south of the levee.
Lakeshore Park is accessible from several points. One of the most popular entrances is located at the north end of Clearview Parkway. At this location there is a small recreational area named Clearview Shores Park. This little park is well landscaped and offers an attractive entrance to the lakefront area. The only drawback is a somewhat limited parking situation.
The great length of the lakefront park makes it an excellent location for biking, walking and running. There are two trails, one on top of the levee and the other running along the shore near the water. The levee trail is generally straight and consists of dirt and gravel. The shoreline trail is paved and offers an excellent surface for bicycles.
The lakefront is a great place to take your dog for a walk or run. Remember that they are required to be on a leash at all times.
Things To SeeThe lakefront covers a lot of territory and offers a lot to see. The homes to the south of the levee are generally upscale and provide pleasent surroundings. Many have interesting architecture and the levee trail offers a birds eye view.
The Ponchartrain Shores trails will take you by a number of other landmarks, including the Causeway and the spectacular mirrored monoliths that overlook it.
Bird sanctuaries are located along the shoreline and a variety of birds can be seen.
Exposed to sometimes violent elements, the lakeshore is an inherently changeable environment. The trees here are relatively young, as trees in this area are vulnerable to storms and generally cannot attain great age or size. The overall appearence is slightly windswept, and one must be aware that storms can roll in quickly off of the lake.
