Metairie, Kenner, River Ridge and Harahan are all essentially suburban in character, consisting mainly of residential areas and the businesses and agencies which serve these residents. East Bank living offers convenient access to everyday needs such as shopping malls, grocery stores, high quality grammar and secondary education, parks, movie theaters, etc. At the same time it is a short drive from the cultural and entertainment resources of New Orleans.
The East Bank is geared toward day to day living. The culture of East Jefferson itself is best descibed as "modern suburbia." However this modern suburb is set within an area of exceptional historic and cultural richness.
East Jefferson residents have easy access to the diverse cultural resources of New Orleans. Most points on the East Bank lie within ten minute access of the city by automobile. New Orleans offers a spectrum of performing arts ranging from performances at the Sanger Theater to the jazz and blues clubs in the French Quarter. The fine arts are well represented by the ever changing exhibets at the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Contemporary Arts Center. And of course there are the cultural treasures of the French Quarter including, among many others, the St. Louis Cathedral and the Cabildo.
Both New Orleans and Jefferson Parish are embedded in the cultural fabric of South Louisiana. The East Bank is a great place to celebrate Mardi Gras. The Metairie parades are family oriented with lots of throws and fun for everyone. The parades form up in the Clearview Shopping Center parking lot, proceed down Veterans to Bonnabel, then proceed back up Veterans to Severn and ultimately disband at Lakeside Shopping Center. Mention New Orleans and most people think great food. And that's easy to understand with restaurants like Antoine's, Alex Patout's, Tujague's and the Brennan establishments. East Bank residents have quick access to all of the great dining offered by the Crescent City. But East Jefferson has some great dining spots of its own including Ruth's Chris Steak House, Steak and Ale, the Brick Oven Cafe, Andrea's and Houston's to name just a few.
Parks...The East Bank has a wealth of park resources, including Lafraniere Park and Ponchartain Shores park. Recreational areas in East Jefferson are well maintained and have a family friendly atmosphere. These are great places to go for a walk, run, bike ride or picnic. These are places that feel safe.
Aside from its own parks, the East Bank is a short drive from many 
others. Fifteen minutes away on the West Bank is Jean Lafitte State
Park. The park offers visitors a chance to experience first hand many of
the wild habitats found in South Louisiana. There are several well maintained
trails including boardwalks through swamp and wetland areas.
The East Bank offers high quality grammar and secondary schools. College level education resources are available in New Orleans and include such nationally recognized institutions as Tulane and Loyola Universities.
East Bank Life...Southern Louisiana is rich with the character imparted by the many cultures which have left their mark here and a wealth of natural resources. New Orleans is a city brimming with unique history and culture. Living in East Jefferson means having easy access to all of the best things offered by New Orleans and southern Louisiana, while enjoying the safety and convenience of family life in the suburbs.
